As a woman I oppose Islam, and here’s why
As an educated, democracy loving, freedom toting, outspoken woman in a secular country, I oppose the presence of Islam in Australia, rather passionately. But why? Why Islam and not other religions? People have asked me time and time again. Good question! As a non religious and not so easily categorised person, I do object to any and all oppression of women, children and innocent people, anywhere. I also do oppose other religions, such as Christianity. But the major difference between Islam and other religions, say.. Christianity, is for the most part Christianity has moved with the times since its most barbaric days, and adapts to the modern freedoms and demands for equal rights in regards to women. Whereas Islam has not. Islam has not changed one iota in 1400 years. Women still “belong” to men in Islam, and are treated with contempt, as secondary citizens.
Brash generalisation, one might say. I would say no, it is not a generalisation or an assumption, my source for this statement is the entire foundation of Islam – the Qur’an. My secondary source is close observation of the general treatment (read oppression) of women in Islamic countries, and even western society behind closed doors. And no, I am not a racist for speaking about this. You cannot convert to a race, you cannot change your race. You can, however, convert to or change your religion. Islam includes many different races, and no, Arabic is not the largest percentage of Islam in the modern world. I am not racist, I am also not a feminist. I just passionately believe that in this day and age women should be treated as equals, and have just as many rights as the male at her side.
The oppression and degradation of women in Islam has been prevalent from the start, in Muhammad’s treatment of women, as described in the hadiths and stipulated in the Qur’an. Let’s start with the basics;
Qur’an (2:223) Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will
Qur’an (4:34) – “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”
Qur’an (38:44) – “And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath…”
Qur’an (4:11) – (Inheritance) “The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females”(see also verse 4:176).
Qur’an (2:282) – (Court testimony) “And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not found then a man and two women.”
Qur’an (2:228) – “and the men are a degree above them [women]”
Qur’an (4:3) – (Wife-to-husband ratio) “Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four”
Bukhari (6:301) – “[Muhammad] said, ‘Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?’ They replied in the affirmative. He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her intelligence.”
Bukhari (6:301) – continued – “[Muhammad said] ‘Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?’ The women replied in the affirmative. He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her religion.'”
Bukhari (2:29) – Women comprise the majority of Hell’s occupants. This is important because the only women in heaven ever mentioned by Muhammad are the virgins who serve the sexual desires of men. (A weak Hadith, Kanz al-`ummal, 22:10, even suggests that 99% of women go to Hell).
As seen clearly, women are but property of men, that must be obedient and submissive, or receive a beating for failing to be so. A woman’s testimony is worth half that of a man, is entitled to only half the inheritance a man would receive, and are all too often only one of multiple wives, whether they like it or not. And this is just the wives! Women are systematically taken as sex slaves for muslim men, as instructed in the Qur’an. The above examples are only a small portion of the instructions regarding women in Islam, I could go on, but I think the point is clear.
If the degradation of women alone was not enough, Islam still condones and justifies the sexual abuse of young girls. It is the rule of Islam to emulate the prophet in their own lives, regardless of the vastly different times they live in, and seeing as the prophet married a 6 year old, and had sexual intercourse with her when she was 9 years old, this is acceptable to muslims. Again, it is acceptable to muslims, even in this modern and more enlightened time, to have sex with girls as young as 9, and even younger than that. The sexual abuse and humiliation of young girls is so prevalent throughout the middle east that Iran has now made it legal. And under Sharia law it is condoned, encouraged. Millions of girls, from the youngest ages, are subjected to the perverted ways of old men, with nowhere to turn, no one to help them, because 1400 years ago a war lord decided there were no boundaries to girls when it came to their ages. This should anger any decent adult, but most especially women.
Many people have said to me that the bible contains similar content regarding women and children. Yes, it did, but it was also changed to suit the evolving times. Women are equals in modern day Christianity. They are not so in modern Islam. There is no modern Islam. Unlike other religions, you either follow the one and only Qur’an, to the letter, or you do not. There is no in between, and any muslim who claims there is an in between is considered a “bad” muslim, or an apostate, by not only fellow muslims, but the Qur’an itself.
If I still have not made myself clear, feel free to do your own research. Start with the treatment of women in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan. Or, for a closer to home look into the dark and oppressive rabbit hole, the child bride cases in Sydney, Australia, the grooming gangs in Rotherham, UK, and so on. Yes, this is happening in our neighbourhoods. In our communities. The question is, what will be done about it?
